Broken Goat is a high‑alpine trail race held on July 18 in Rossland, British Columbia and organized by PACE Trail Runs. The event brings runners into the West Kootenay alpine around Red Mountain Resort and Nancy Greene Summit for a single-day festival of ridge running, steep climbs and long descents.
The weekend offers four distances: a 50 km ultra, a 25 km traverse, a 12 km summit run and a short kids race. Start times on race day are staggered — 50 km at 6:00 am, 25 km at 7:00 am, 12 km at 9:00 am and the kids race at 9:05 am — and the 25 km and 50 km are point‑to‑point traverses that require shuttles to the Nancy Greene Summit / Seven Summits trailhead. Package pick‑up takes place the evening before at The Josie Hotel in Rossland.
What sets Broken Goat apart is its genuine alpine character: singletrack ridgelines, sustained exposure on Unnecessary Ridge and the “7 Summits” trail, and the chance to summit peaks such as Mount Plewman and Old Glory (2376 m on the 50 km course). The race enforces mandatory safety gear, operates cupless aid stations to reduce waste, and runs remote aid locations (Granite Mountain aid station accessed by 4x4). Community features include an awards party and live music at The Josie, on‑mountain dining at Red Mountain Resort, and a kids race that donates entry fees to the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Georgia’s Wish.
Registration details are posted by the race team (registration opens November 9 at 7:00 am PST) and shuttle sign‑up and mandatory pre‑race briefings are part of the race logistics.
